Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

The Back Story
The last time I got my hair cut I sat down in the lobby for five minutes to wait. They had a variety of hair magazines to thumb through. Of course I took a look. It got me thinking. These extreme hairstyles are a lot like sculpture. "What would it be like to sculpt hair for a living," I thought. I asked my hair dresser what he thought. He said he thought of himself as an artist. As we discussed what that meant he said a few things that I found very interesting: Hair is the only canvas that grows back, and we get to mold it again and again. I was impressed by his ideas and had to agree. The Discussion When was the last time you got up in the morning and did not make sure the form (3D shape) on the top of your head (hair) looked exactly as it should? We are all artists to some degree everyday when we get ready for work or school. Do you like your sculpture (hair) to look the same every day? Why would you change your sculpture (hair)? Do you really need someone (hair dresser, mom, best friend, etc) to work on your sculpture with you? Have you ever thought of drastically changing your sculpture's color? Have you ever wished your sculpture had a different texture or form? The Assignment Create a design for a wearable, hair sculpture on a piece of drawing paper that fits your book. Your sculpture may be abstract representational or abstract non-representational. Check your vocabulary worksheet for definitions. Your design should include color, texture, and value. Check the posters in the back of the room for definitions. Don't forget to NOOF it! The Inspiration Check out the gallery for inspiration or google: hair as sculpture, extreme hairstyles, or beard art. I've also attached a line drawing I created to start my assignment, although I have not yet added color, texture, or value to my art:
